Education
Jack Burtchaell studied Archaeology, History and Geography at University College Dublin and graduated in 1982 with a First Class Honours Degree. After winning a post graduate scholarship he continued in U.C.D. in the Geography Department specialising in the field of Historical Geography. Further research work followed at the Institute of Irish Studies at Queen's University Belfast. While teaching field studies to undergraduates his interest in heritage tourism developed, and ever since he has combined tourism and active historical research.

Awards
For the past 25 years he has conducted Walking Tours of Medieval Waterford and one or two day tours of South East Ireland. Jack has been awarded 'Best Tour Feature' by CIE International Awards of Excellence in 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005 and a Special Merit Award 2007. He also won a Bord Fáilte Irish Welcome Award in 2002. In March 2001 he won Jury's Hotel Achievement Award. In 2009 Jack picked up the first 'Heritage Individual' award from the Munster Express/Dooley's Hotel Heritage & Culture Awards. He also won a bursary to research the historical links of Waterford and South East with Newfoundland, Canada. He is part-time lecturer for Maynooth University in the Outreach campus at St Kieran's College Kilkenny city.
